I was surprised that the American women in Texas take on their husband's name after getting married, 'cos in Malaysia, it is considered old fashion to do so. See, in the professional world, you build the goodwill of your name in your last name. So if you take on your hubbie's last name, then all that goodwill will be gone, and you'd have to start from the scratch again. People will be scratching their heads and asking who so-n-so (your new identity) is. The problem doesn't really arise in USA because people always refer to each other by their first name!
So nolar, don't think I'll be giving up the "Wong", common though it may be. Though it may be fun to receive an invitation card, addressed: "To Ch. Ch. and Ch. Ch." or just "To 4(Ch)"!
i wouldn't give up my common yeoh either!!!!!! (or my common - 'eeleng') :P
shouldn't really be surprised at how they've taken the last name to a whole new level ... this is after all the land where you can get 50 different kinds of milk to go with you 100 types of cereals ... :))
btw, this post was a follow-up to a previous post - on last names - which was my response to how some of my friends in m'sia/s'pore have been adopting this american convention ...
