resolutions for 2010

am staying up late to see the snow. i'll probably be disappointed. am listening to 'johanna' (from sweeney todd) - 2nd half of bernadette peter's sondheim etc. concert. love it!

it occurred to me that i've yet to make any resolutions for 2010!

i seem to have fulfilled most of the resolutions i made last year. well, i guess they weren't all that difficult ... or perhaps it's just that i've discovered the KEY to successful resolutions - make manageable/achievable ones :P

just wanted to say at this point that i'm probably abandoning the project 365: a photo a day - it's not as easy as it appears. it takes time to take decent photos. ok - i have time but i don't lead a very varied life. i also don't want to clutter my online space with junk bad photos. i have standards ...

... and might i add that here that i'm on a facebook fast for one week. it began when i woke up this morning - glad to report that so far so good. i got  up and just decided that i need to use my time more constructively. i think that checking in once in a while if you've a task at hand is fine. however if you're like me and have too much time on your hand, facebook is a super time waster. and most ppl's updates are inane. (mine certainly are). hehe.

okie - resolutions time. i resolve to:

really celebrate life. birthdays, anniversaries, awards, festivals, etc. not to let work, business, laziness or apathy allow us to pass over landmark events. i think we show our gratitude to God for our blessings by celebrating life with family and friends

  • climb gunung kinabalu to commemorate reaching the middle aged years and throw big birthday bashes for both of us
  • have an open house for cny and cook up a storm or 2 since we're likely to be in durham
  • run a half-marathon (!)

be thankful for all things. the essence of many festivals is thanksgiving. remembrance. to not take what we have - health, wealth, relationships, shelter, peace, the environment, etc. for granted.

  • treasure existing stuff more by using them, otherwise they become junk
  • call parents more often
  • write to friends more frequently
  • complain/whine less. 'nuff said. :)

it's easy be swept into a life of excesses in this age of plentiful. we need to curb the insatiable appetite for more ... for as powerful as we think we are, we are not Master of the universe ... and therefore i hope to continue/maintain leading a sustainable lifestyle. reduce, reuse, recycle. we can all do more and do with less.

in addition to the green and frugal practices we've already adopted, i resolve to up the ante by
  • composting organic kitchen waste
  • travel within southeast asia after we leave the US, ie. don't plan overseas vacations for next 5 years (other than australia)
  • eat local and in season as much as possible, i.e. when in rome, eat pasta ... ;)
  • recycle aluminium foil
  • use up entire vegetable, waste not ugly parts ...
  • eat out less. today's dinner was a barley risotto with nori and spinach. topped with toasted walnuts and grated parmesan. super yummy. eating vegetarian has led me to discover so many new recipes and increased the variety in our diets manifold. shall be attempting mark bittman's beet rosti with rosemary tomorrow ... :D
